New Delhi: As many as 2,258 incidents of naxal violence had occurred in 2009 resulting in 908 deaths while 1,981 naxalites were arrested and the government has adopted an integrated approach in dealing with leftwing extremists activities in areas of security, development and public perception, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken said in written replies to various questions that the total number of naxal violence incidents were 2,258 with 908 being killed in 2009. Jharkhand ranked first with maximum 742 incidents, followed by 529 in Chhattisgarh, 266 in Orissa, 255 in West Bengal, 232 in Bihar and 154 in Maharashtra.
Of the 908 deaths in naxal violence in 2009, 290 died in Chhattisgarh, 208 in Jharkhand, 158 in West Bengal, 93 in Maharashtra, 72 in Bihar, 67 in Orissa and 18 in Andhra Pradesh, he informed.
Of the 1981 naxalites arrested last year, 421 were in Chhattisgarh, followed by 367 in Jharkhand, 358 in Andhra Pradesh and 341 in Bihar. In Orissa, 176 naxalites were arrested while in West Bengal their number was 143.
This year till February 23, total 408 naxalites were arrested of which 114 naxalites in Chhattisgarh, 69 in Bihar, 60 in West Bengal, 56 in Uttar Pradesh, 39 in Jharkhand, 34 in Andhra Pradesh, 28 in Orissa and 13 in Maharashtra, he pointed out.
Mr Maken said the registration of criminal cases, their investigation and persecution are a continuous process. The CPI(Maoist) has an organisational structure with a politburo and Central Committee at its apex level. General Secretary of CPI (Maoists) Muppalla Laxman Rao, alias, Ganapati is underground, he informed.
''According to intelligence inputs, CPI(Maoists) extorts large sums from contractors and others in the naxal-affected areas,'' he said in reply to another question regarding leftist comrades minting money to the tune of Rs 1,600 crore through weekly extortions apart from providing every facilities to the Maoists through Bangladesh and Nepal borders.
However, Mr Maken said there was no inputs about naxalites running regular public warfare schools in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
