In Uganda, gay sex is a serious criminal offence but now there seems to be some respite as the president of the country, Yoweri Museveni, is opposed to this provision as he finds it rather harsh.
In proposed legislation the ruling National Resistance Movement Party is likely to overturn the death sentence provision and the new bill will would apply to sexually active gays living with HIV and same-sex rapes.
Now, it is proposed that anyone convicted of a homosexual act, which includes touching someone of the same sex with the intent of committing a homosexual act, would face life imprisonment.
But the social activists believe that the proposed bill will still promote discrimination and backfire on the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.
