The Protoss of StarCraft 2 are often the species of choice for many StarCraft 2 first time players. If you're going to learn basic Protoss strategy it helps to know a little background information about the Protoss.
The Protoss, like the Zerg were engineered by an ancient race called the Xel'Naga. The Protoss are a very technologically advanced species with vast psionic abilities. They employ a vast array of hi-tech mechanical ground forces and ships. Their attacks mostly consist of devastating psionic and plasma based weapons. Unlike other species in the game, the Protoss structures are "warped" into existence through the use of probes instead of built. Because of the advanced nature of their units and structures it often takes longer for them to be built. It would be in your best interest to utilize chrono boost as much as possible If you're creating a potent, but basic protoss strategy Chrono boost can increase the production or research speed at the target building by 50% for a total of 20 seconds.
The protoss if used properly can be a very powerful species. A couple basic protoss strategy concepts are outlined below:
1. Utilize Choke Points. This is basic starcraft 2 strategy, not just basic protoss strategy. This is a basic defensive technique that should be in the arsenal of every StarCraft 2 player when defending a base. A choke point is essentially an area within the terrain that narrows to the point that it confines the movement of units. From a defensive standpoint it makes defending your position much easier. It can also buy you some much needed time in certain circumstances.
2. Use Chrono Boost. As mentioned above chrono boost can increase the production or research speed at the target building by 50% for 20 seconds. The protoss aren't the fastest species when comes to building structures and units. For this very reason it's recommended that you utilize chrono boost as much as possible.
3. Scout. Scouting is essential for basic protoss strategy. Always scout your enemy whenever possible. Knowing in ahead of time what sort of build your opponent is creating can give you the edge in nearly any situation. At the same time you also want to keep your enemy from scouting you if possible.
4. Dark Templars - Use Them. Dark Templars are one of the most powerful units within the protoss. Dark Templars are permanently cloaked which means they can move unseen and undetected amongst your opponent. If your opponent is a beginner he'll most likely have no idea what's going on before its too late. Even an experienced player if caught off guard can suffer great casualties at the hands of the Dark Templars.
A good, sound and basic protoss strategy is essential to becoming a better starcraft 2 player.
