New Delhi: An inter-religious group today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue of consensual gay sex, which was decriminalised by the Delhi High Court earlier this year.
Led by Archbishop Vincent M Concessao, the Archbishop of Delhi, the group expressed the view that decriminalising unnatural sex posed a grave danger to the social fabric of society and was totally against Indian culture, Delhi Catholic Archdiocese spokesperson Reverend Dr Dominic Emmanuel said.
The group said the Christian community did not treat people with gay tendencies as criminals but the Church feared that decriminalising unnatural sex will increase cases of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS.
It added that legalising it would mean granting gays many other rights, including that of marriage and raising a family which was problematic.
