More than 58 pc turnout; Havildar killed in naxal attack

Ranchi: Barring a Maoist attack killing a jawan and injuring four others in hypersensitive Palamu district, the fifth and final phase of polling in Jharkhand today ended peacefully, recording over 58 per cent turnout of an estimated 3.4 million electorate. Election office sources here said more than 56 per cent electorate exercised their franchise in 16 Assembly seats spread over seven districts, mostly naxal-dominated, to decide the fate of 290 candidates.

The havildar, identified as Satinder Singh, was killed and four others injured, one of them critically, in a gunbattle between security forces and ultras of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) following a landmine explosion at Mahur under Mohammadganaj police station in Hussainabad Assembly constituency.

Superintendent of Police Jatin Narwal said 12 Jharkhand Armed Police jawans, along with a local chowkidar, were on way for regular patrolling in the area when the blast occurred at about 0745 hrs.

The ultras exploded a middle school building and a culvert respectively at Kowwal village and Mayapur under Chhatarpur Assembly area in Palamu.

In Chatra, a can bomb was recovered near booth number 102 at Ektara village under Hunterganj block.

About 1,00,000 jawans, including paramilitary forces, state police personnel and homeguards, were deployed to man 4579 polling booths.

In addition, about ten choppers were pressed into service for aerial survey.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ashok Kumar Sinha told UNI eight webcam were installed in seven Asembly segments to monitor actvities of the polling process by both EC offices at the state capital here and the national capital.

The Assembly segments going to the polls were Chaibasa (ST), Jaganathpur (ST), Kharsawan (ST), Seraikella (ST), Garhwa, Bhawanathpur, Panki, Daltonganj, Bishrampur, Chhatarpur (SC), Hussainabad, Simaria (SC), Chatra (SC), Latehar (SC), Manika (ST) and Barkatha.
