US Tech firms spent $111 million lobbying politicians

The Centre for Responsive Politics has just collected how much each tech firm spent in 2009 lobbying American politicians to ensure they made laws favourable to the IT, BPO, KPO and Telecom firms.

Between them, the tech firms spent $111.5 million lobbying the political powers that be in 2009. NASSCOM spent $340,000 towards promoting their cause.

The NASSCOM lobbying is dwarfed when compared to Apple which spent $1.5 million. Business Software Alliance, set up to stop software piracy, spent about $1.7 million.  CISCO spent $1.1 million.  Dell spent $2.3 million.  HP spent $3.7 million.  Microsoft and IBM spent about $5.5 million each.

What is bit baffling in this report that Patni Computer Systems is listed as having spent zero dollars.

In 2008, NASSCOM has spent $270 thousand dollars. What did NASSCOM lobby about in 2009?  According to Government documents, it is for ‘international technology and immigration issues’.

Most of this money was used to lobby against the US Government crackdown on the H1B Visas. The NASSCOM lobbying did not result any wins for the Indian tech sector.

The US Government continues tightening the rules for H1B Visas. Last year, a law was passed saying any American tech firm receiving bail out funds should give local techies preference over Indians on working visas.

In Jan, 2010, the US Government blocked all desi body shops in the country from importing Indian techies on H1B Visas and then sub contracting them to American tech firms.

Center for Responsive Politics is America’s premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit, the organization aims to create a more educated voter, an involved citizenry and a more responsive government.

If these are the "best and brightest" as the H-1B proponents claim then a minimum base pay rate for H-1B's at say 250K annually should be included for ALL H-1B visa holders(including currently held visas) After all a good lawyer will make more than that and I don't see any claims of a lawyer shortage. If this is about cheap labor then they will balk at this.

Real unemployment is 20 perent. I have a suggestion for my american friends. Call your senator today /congress men today/call every one who matters. Ask them to bring laws to oust from jobs all doctors whose basic medical education was not done in US (even if they are US citizens) I am sure you will get 70 votes in senate. Ok if US doesnt hae enough doctors they can bring legislation to allow anyone who has completed school and has knowledge of internet should be allowed to practice medicine. Isnt it fair that Americans arent allowed to compete fairly. In India school dropouts are more successful doctors than these failures who come to US unable to compete with the RMPs. WIth that you can have more than a million school graduates readily making 200k each year. would be that be a turn around in this recession?

H-1B leeches are a disease upon America. We want them to leave our country and never come back.

Despite factually inaccurate Desi propaganda to the contrary, the H-1B and L-1 visa programs deprive Americans the right to compete for jobs in our own country. Why can't companies like Microsoft find American talent? Because they don't want to - and to ensure this, they bought the laws to make it happen. The H-1B masterminds - Microsoft and convicted felon Jack Abramoff. Don't believe me, Google Abramoff and H-1B. Laying off American workers and hiring their foreign visa replacements in immoral and hopefully soon, illegal. US unemployment is over 10% with the real unemployment rate over 17% if you count workers with expired unemployment benefits and under-employed part-time hourly workers. The simplest and fastest way to solve this crisis is to enact an IMMEDIATE moratorium on all new H-1B and L-1 visas and send temporary foreign visa workers back to their country of origin at the first term visa expiration date. Bravo to the USCIS for enforcing existing US laws that enforce only visas for temporary workers with a direct employee-employer relationship. Guest workers, if you don't meet the employer-employee criteria, be warned. The US employees you replaced would like nothing better than to send you home and reclaim their careers. India has passed strict laws to outlaw the replacement of your citizens with foreign workers. Certainly you can understand every day American's frustration that those with the largest bribes to government win while the rest of us lose our jobs, homes, healthcare, and life savings.

May the H1B visa end! Employers can legally discriminate against qualified Americans by firing them without cause and recruiting only H-1B guest-workers to replace them. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has said: “H-1B workers may be hired even when a qualified U.S. worker wants the job, and a U.S. worker can be displaced from the job in favor of a foreign worker.” Some companies that discriminate against American workers are so brazen that their job advertisements say “H-1B visa holders only.” And some companies in the United States have workforces that consist almost entirely of H-1B guest-workers.
