New Delhi: The Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University (MGIHU), Vibhuti Narain Rai, has said something which is hard to understand that why he said something like that!

“There is a race among women writers to demonstrate they are the greatest prostitute”, said Rai in an interview to a prominent Hindi journal that hit the stands yesterday.

Yes, this is the statement from the V-C of MGIHU. However, the statement is leading to demands for his resignation but Mr. Rai is still stands by his unexpected and very shocking statement.

The entire “feminist discourse has reduced to a grand celebration of infidelity”, Vibhuti Narain Rai told Naya Gyanodaya, which is published by Bharatiya Jnanpith — that confers the prestigious Jnanpith award.

A 1975-batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Rai was appointed V-C of MGIHU in 2008. The Central University was set up to promote Hindi language and literature.

Accusing him of being intoxicated with power, women writers have demanded that Rai to be sacked.

Prominent writer Krishna Sobti said “If he has said so, it’s an insult not only to women, but the violation of our Constitution. The government should immediately sack him. He doesn’t deserve to be the V-C of such a noble institution.”

“Lekhikaon men hod lagi hai yeh sabit karne ki ki unse badi chhinal koi nahi hai... Yeh vimarsh (Feminist discourse) bewafai ke virat utsav ki tarah hai,” Rai says in the interview.

In a derogatory reference to a noted woman writer whose autobiography won accolades, he goes on to say: “Mujhe lagta hai idhar prakashit ek bahu-promoted aur overrated lekhika ki aatmkathamak pustak ka shirshak ‘Kitne Bistaron Men Kitni Baar’ ho sakta tha. (The title of a recently published autobiography of a highly promoted and overrated writer could be ‘How Many Times in How Many Beds’).”

At another place in the interview, he dubs the character of a famous story as “nymphomaniac kutiya”.

Asked by The Sunday Express which women writers he was referring to, Rai laughed. And repeated what he had said: “It’s not fair to take names, but you can see, this tendency to prove themselves the ‘sabse badi chhinal’ is growing among women writers. You can find the references of ‘kitne bistaron men kitani baar’ in their work.”

According to award-winning writer Maitreyi Pushpa, Rai’s remarks reflect the mindset of men who first try to take advantage of budding women writers and then lash out when unsuccessful. “It’s they who pass judgments on their chastity,” says Pushpa, adding: “Does he use the same adjective for his girl students? Rai’s wife is also a writer. Where does he slot her?” Pushpa feels men such as Rai are “lailaaj (can’t be cured)”. “The government should immediately ban them.”

Calling the V-C’s remarks “hugely offensive”, Shalaka Samman winner Mannu Bhandari said: “He has lost all his senses. A former IPS is behaving like a street constable.”

Saying she didn’t expect such comments from a V-C, Pushpa adds: “We women writers don’t need certificates from people like Narain. So far men governed the women discourse, now when we want to come up, they are frustrated at the breakdown of patriarchal society. What can be expected of a police officer intoxicated with power?”

However, the question is that why a man, someone like him, the V-C of a reputed university said something like that. There must be reason behind it for sure!

I am hurt, shocked and horrified at finding there are people who defend Mr Rai's comments. Feminism doesn't mean men=pigs. This myth has been perpetrated by those who were too put off by the movement's aim which was to establish a 'woman=human beings' equation. My advice to the likes of Ms Poonam Malik is, please make careful research and analysis, and not regressive Hindi movies that establish and exaggerate the ridiculous 'feminist shrews Vs pious, nice little karvachauth observing sweet Indian girls' parallels, the basis for your argument. The word chinaal, no matter how you define it, is used in a derogatory sense. The word encapsulates the hatred and disgust the elite among the society have towards women who sell their bodies to please the sexual appetites of men who lust after the female body but neatly categorize them into 'used, dirty and throw-able' and 'virgin, clean and worthy of being acquired(married/ associated with in public)'. The 'women writers are chinaals' comment, therefore, denigrates both sex workers and women writers. It represents the mindset of a repressed lot(men AND women: poison affects everyone alike) that believes in patriarchy and in the need for women to be told what to do and what to stay away from.

The word chhinal is O.K. in the right context. The feminist movement has its foundation in calling all men PIGS--male chauvinist pigs -mcps.Are all men pigs? Is Kapil Sibal a PIG??Has action been taken against feminists who use the word PIG.In india where Raksha Bandhan ,Karva Chauth ,bhaiya dooj have made the brother sister and husband-relation divine and religious;women writers have started movements to 1)punish marital rape 2)legalise prostitution 3)legalise live -in relationships4)file false cases under 498A anti dowry law5) enter Parliament through the back door through reservations--when Sonia Gandhi,Shiela Dikshit ,Sushma Swaraj and Prathiba Patil already enjoy more power than any man in india.

by the way chhinaal does not mean prostitute but is the equivalent of slut. both distribute their favours but the former does it for a living.

Before you sling mud on the VC Mr. Vibhuti Narain Rai consider ... 1. Whether the recent Hindi women writers he quoted promoting & pushing sexually explicit material in to main stream literature in the name of women liberation. 2. Emancipation of women is not voicing support to female sexual promiscuity because in Indian society Male promiscuity tolerated while for women it is abhorred, truth is civilized societies promiscuity of both men and women is equally abhorred. 3.With the epidemic HIV, plaguing Indian society due to limited awareness & killing millions we cannot afford to give main stream endorsement for such explicit sexual literature because it sends wrong message to majority of youth. 4. Struggles for scientific education, technical training, social role, human rights, and employment issues for women are the major themes for Women liberation, eg. Gorky’s 'Mother', Tagore’s poem 'Upagupta'. Because they cannot sell decent works for Big bucks, either female / male writers MUST NOT promote sexually explicit material for money sake.
