One of the problems with Indian cyber security is that Indian Government thinks that e-surveillance is a substitute for cyber forensics and cyber security capabilities. The Government of India (GOI) must act upon the suggestions and recommendations regarding e-surveillance in India as soon as possible. We need to adopt safeguards against the perilous provisions incorporated through the Information Technology Amendment Bill, 2008 (Bill 2008) regarding e-surveillance in India. In the past as well the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has not been uniform in its stand against encryption standards in the Blackberry services in India. The security agencies of India are insisting upon weak encryption standards in India so that they can monitor the electronic communications of Indian citizens.
As per the latest news, the e-mail providers may be forced to have e-mail servers in India. It seems the GOI was unable to appreciate the abovementioned suggestions in true perspective. Instead of providing good guidelines and safeguards, it is suggesting for excessive and illegal e-surveillance in India.
