The Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness Dalai Lama organising the Gurukul Programme 2008 from June 8 to July 12 at Dharmasala of Himachal Pradesh.
The Gurukul Project is one of the many projects of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is a month long project held at Dharamsala every June, in which the participants are selected on a national level in collaboration with the SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture amongst Youth)
The project involves students from higher secondary schools and colleges who undergo a month long stay - for boys in the monastery and the girls in a nunnery. During the course of their stay the students are exposed to the monastic tradition and Tibetan culture. They are also encouraged to teach and help the monks and nuns and share their insights.
The Programme Manager Thupten Tsewang said that this year they have selected a group of nine young students from colleges and schools around the country and put them up at Dharamsala for a period of one month for interaction with the Tibetan community.
The boys are staying at the Namgyal Monastery and the girls are put up at the Dolmaling Nunnery. There is no rigid itinerary planned for the students but are given the freedom to explore what stimulates their intellect.
They will be having six boys and eight girls this time. The selected students are sent a brief literature on the Foundation with an outline on the Gurukul project having reference to travel schedule and general information on the Tibetans and the Dharamsala.
