Economist Surjit Bhalla quits PM’s economic council day after Urjit Patel resigned as RBI governor

Economist Surjit Bhalla has resigned from the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (PMEAC or EAC-PM), a think tank-like body that advises the Prime Minister of India on crucial economic issues.

The anouncmenet of Bhalla’s resignation from the council came a day after Reserve Bank of India Urjit Patel stepped down from his post. Patel quit as RBI governor months after differences between the government and the Patel-led RBI became public.

Bhalla was a part-time member of the EAC-PM. The EAC- PM is headed by Niti Aayog member Bibek Debroy. Economists Rathin Roy, Ashima Goyal and Shamika Ravi are other part-time members
