Noida: Cigarette sparks fire in parking lot of Auto Expo

GREATER NOIDA: The Auto Expo continued to remain a spot of attraction on Sunday as more than 1.2 lakh visitors arrived at the show held at India Exposition Mart in Greater Noida.

According to the sources, the organisers are expecting the event to register substantial turnout on weekdays as well.

“The motor show again witnessed more than 1 lakh visitors on Sunday,” said Rajesh Menon, director general, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The expo will end on February 12.

Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon, a minor fire broke out in the open parking ground near the expo. It came to notice when some people complained of smoke coming out from the parking area.

Naresh Kumar, fire station officer, Phase 3 told TOI that they got information around 1.30pm about a small fire breaking out in the open space between two cars parked in the parking area.

“We immediately rushed two fire tenders to the spot and noticed flames under one of the parked cars. It seemed like someone had lit a cigarette and thrown near the car. However, the fire couldn’t spread to the car as it was doused with the help of fire extinguishers,” Kumar said, adding that fire tenders were not required for this case.

The fire department officials said a small fire extinguisher remains installed in the parking space at the Expo. “Three fire tenders are parked around the Expo Mart area and portable small extinguishers were used to douse the flames,” he said. Last year, as many as three cars had caught fire, resulting in huge damage to the vehicles.
