BJP demands probe into custodial death of party leader, seeks compensation

nBJP legislator and leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Dharamlal Kaushik on Tuesday demanded that a compensation of ` 25 Lakh be paid to the kin of Chandrika Prasad Tiwari, who died in police custody.

He also demanded that the post-mortem on the body be conducted by a team of five doctors and the whole process be videographed.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said that action would be taken against the guilty after getting the post-mortem report.

On the directive of the CM, Bilaspur SP has line attached the town inspector (TI).

Addressing the media at Bilaspur on Tuesday, Kaushik demanded action should be taken against the TI and other accused under section 302 of the IPC.

Giving details of the incident, he said, “On April 7, Chandrika Prasad Tiwari had a scuffle with Tulsi Tiwari and his family over a land dispute. After Chandrika called the emergency number 112, the police had called the family to police station.”

At the police station, the police used abusive language and physically assaulted both father and son after keeping them in police lock-up, he added. On April 8, they were produced before Marwahi Tehsil court at 12 pm.

They had to wait there till 4 pm. In between, Chandrika’s condition deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital.

As he was in a critical condition, the doctors referred him to CIMS, Bilaspur, where he passed away.

Meanwhile, Kalibai Tiwari, wife of Chandrika Tiwari, also demanded action against TI and Tehsildhar in a written complaint.
