Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini celebrates her 69th birthday on Monday. The day also marks her golden jubilee in the Hindi film industry. A biography on Hema Malini, titled Beyond The Dreamgirl and written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee, will be launched Monday to mark her birthday.
Born on October 16, 1948 in Jeeyapuram, Tiruchirappalli district, Madras, Malini was the third child of Jaya Lakshmi Chakravarti, a film producer, and VSR Chakravarti.
Having started her film career in 1968 with Raj Kapoor-starrer Sapno Ka Saudagar, she enchanted movie buffs with roles in films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Dream Girl and Satte Pe Satta. An accomplished classical dancer, Hema Malini earned the epithet of ‘dreamgirl’ for her flawless beauty and became a pioneering female superstar in an otherwise male-oriented film industry. The actress has starred in more than 155 movies and has also produced and directed two movies, and also directed a TV serial. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000 and has won two Filmfare awards – Best Actress for Seeta aur Geeta in 1973 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
