Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has apologised after being severely criticised on social media for modelling for a Traveller India magazine, wearing a T-shirt that is insensitive to refugees and immigrants.
She said that she feels horrible for hurting the sentiments of people.
Magazine cover row: Priyanka Chopra apologises for ‘insulting’ refugees
The T-shirt she wore for the cover suggested that she is a traveller, and not a refugee, immigrant or outsider. This made many slam her for being insensitive to the plight of refugees.
Priyanka Chopra had reportedly said that she’s really apologetic about sentiments being hurt.
“I am very affected and feel really horrible, but the message has been misconstrued,” she was quoted as saying.
The magazine issued an official statement saying that the message was interpreted in a wrong way.
The statement read: “We believe that the opening up of borders and the breaking down of walls can help us discover the world, and open up our minds and hearts. So, when we had actress Priyanka Chopra wear a T-shirt we created on the cover of our sixth anniversary issue, we had a point to make. And it’s not about privilege or fashion.”
