Action films work well with the Indian audience and the success of Marjaavaan is proof. Sidharth Malhotra, who has been seen in films like Kapoor & Sons and Hasee Toh Phasee, has tried hard to shed his chocolate boy image and turn into an action hero in Marjaavaan.
The audience seems to have approved of Sidharth’s effort as Marjaavaan made around Rs 7 crore on the first day of its release. On its first weekend, the film collected a sum of Rs 17.39 crore.
It, in fact, performed well on Monday too as it earned Rs 4.15 crore. Marjaavaan saw a little drop on Tuesday as it made around Rs 3.61 crore. On Wednesday, Marjaavaan remained steady as it earned Rs 3.16 crore.
Sidharth was last seen on the big screen in Jabariya Jodi which also starred Parineeti Chopra. It proved to be a big dud at the box office. Sidharth looked to redeem himself through Marjaavaan and the decent box office collection of the film has helped him do the same.
Though Marjaavaan has good box office numbers, the film failed to impress the critics. Our reviewer Nairita Mukherjee gave the film 1 out of 5 stars. The film sees Riteish Deshmukh in a negative role. Talking about his and Sidharth’s performance our reviewer wrote, “Riteish tries, but it is impossible to take seriously a menacing villain who speaks in verse. It is equally impossible to take a hero who rhymes kanpatti’ (forehead) and Ganpati in a serious threat, for his word.” Tara Sutaria is playing Sidharth’s love interest in the film.
Marjaavaan is written and directed by Milap Zaveri, who has helmed ab action project like John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate and sex comedies like Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade.
