Man critical after being shot by bike-borne assailants in Film City, close to where Big B was shooting.
Three unknown assailants arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire at Film City in Goregaon – barely a few metres from where Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan was shooting on Friday afternoon – injuring Raju Shinde, the general secretary of Shiv Sena Cine Wing, a security contractor, and cable operator.
Shinde was first rushed to Lifeline Hospital, and later shifted to Nanavati Hospital. His condition is said to be critical. The police suspect a property dispute to be behind the attack. Shinde’s family claimed that he had been receiving threats to his life and had even filed complaints, but the police had not taken the matter seriously. Amitabh, who was busy shooting around 20 feet away, heard the gunshots and later tweeted about the “gang war shootout”.
Other film crew who were shooting nearby also heard the ensuing commotion. Bhushan Kumar’s wife and filmmaker Divya Khosla Kumar, who was heading towards her shooting spot, heard the shots being fired. “I instantly called up my cast and informed them about the firing and ordered an evacuation from the sets,” she said.
According to the police, Shinde, 48, was sitting outside Gate No 2 of Film City when the three bikers arrived. While two of them stayed back, the third who was wearing a helmet walked towards Shinde and taking out a weapon fired three round at him. Two bullets hit Shinde in the stomach, and he collapsed on the spot. The other two assailants then started their bikes and after the shooter joined them, began to make good their escape. The security guard at the gate tried to stop them, but they threatened to shoot him and fled. Workers told police that the three shooters were seen in Film City the previous day too.
People close to Shinde allege that a business partner could be behind the shooting, as the two had been at loggerheads in the recent past and had filed cross complaints against each other. Shinde was in partnership with three others – Johnson Pereira, Ravi Chavhna and Rakesh Bhosle – in a firm called JRR Enterprises. However, Shinde had differences with Bhosle and had opted out. Bhosle later started his own business with two others.
Despite several attempts, Bhosle was unavailable for comment. Shinde, who is also into the cable business, is a well-known face in Goregaon. He also owns property in Aarey, is a security contractor in Film City, and was into set-building too. Senior Inspector Vilas Chauhan of Aarey police station said, “We have registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC, including 307 (attempt to murder). Statements are being recorded and sketches of the accused are being prepared.”
