In a major decision, the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government made Bollywood actress Vidya Balan the brand ambassador of Samajwadi Pension Yojana.
Vidya, in the coming months, will be seen campaigning about the scheme in the state.

If reports are to be believed, the Samajwadi Party is planning to use the scheme as a political tool for the upcoming Assembly polls.
The announcement of Balan’s appointment was made by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday.

The scheme, launched on February 28, 2014, aims at providing financial assistance to nearly 40 lakhs rural people. The Samajwadi Pension scheme is expected to replace the existing pension scheme in Uttar Pradesh namely Rani Laxmibai Pension Yojana.
Introduced by the Uttar Pradesh government, this new pension scheme strives to provide financial assistance at least to one family out three poor families.
