India vs New Zealand: Prithvi Shaw returns to Test squad; Mayank Agarwal replaces Rohit Sharma in ODIs

NEW DELHI: Mayank Agarwal will replace injured Rohit Sharma in the 3-match ODI series in New Zealand. Prithvi Shaw meanwhile makes a comeback to Tests as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the replacements and the Test squad on Tuesday.

Along with Prithvi Shaw, Navdeep Saini has also been included in the squad for red-ball cricket.

Ishant Sharma, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury has also been named in the 16-man Test squad but his inclusion will be subject to a fitness clearance.
The calf-injury that Rohit Sharma suffered in the fifth T20 International against New Zealand on Sunday ruled him out of the rest of the tour.

“Rohit sustained a left calf muscle strain during the fifth T20I against New Zealand at Tauranga on Sunday. He underwent an MRI scan in Hamilton on Monday. The opening batsman has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI and the Test series and will be referred to the National Cricket Academy for further management of his injury,” the BCCI release stated.

“The senior selection committee has named Mayank Agarwal in the ODI squad as Rohit’s replacement.”
On the other hand, Shaw, who was banned for 8 months for a doping violation has returned to the Test squad after some excellent performances in the domestic season.

Shaw last played in the Test series against West Indies in 2018 at home which was also his debut series.
Shubman Gill, who recently scored a double ton against New Zealand A also finds a place in in the Test squad.
Pacer Saini too has made his way into the Test side following impressive performances in limited overs cricket. Saini had received his maiden Test call-up for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in 2018 but is yet to make his debut. However, he has gone on to play three ODIs and 10 T20s for India.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah also returned to the Test squad after missing out the entire home season due to a stress fracture.

Kuldeep Yadav, who did not make the eleven in the five T20s against New Zealand, has been dropped from the Test squad with the selectors going for two specialist spinner options in Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.
The 3-match ODI series begins in Hamilton on Wednesday.

The two-Test series begins in Wellington on February 21.
