World Cup 2019: Injured Vijay Shankar ruled out, Mayank Agarwal to fly in as replacement

MUMBAI: All-rounder Vijay Shankar; who had been ruled out ahead of the match against England for Sunday, owing to a toe injury that he suffered during a training session earlier, has now been ruled out of the tournament.

Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal will be Shankar’s replacement. The latter injured his left toe while facing pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the nets.

The BCCI has already approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) with the request that has been approved. Shankar is on his way back to India while Agarwal is on his way to London.

Agarwal will join the team in Birmingham where India are scheduled to play a match on July 2 against Bangladesh. India played England at the same venue in Sunday, losing their first World Cup game to the hosts in the process.
While the last five overs of India’s unsuccessful chase continues to raise questions and invite fan-fury, the Virat Kohli-led side are very much in the race to bag the semi-final spot.

The team has two matches left (vs Bangladesh & vs Sri Lanka) and any one win will see them through.
